Curious about the glowing LED light therapy masks used by celebrities and social media influencers as part of their skincare routine? Imagine a device that can treat acne, can slow down aging and rejuvenate your skin without feeling any pain at all. In fact, so reliable that NASA originally developed this technology to heal astronauts. The most commonly used colours are Red and blue, but it actually has more colors with different benefits. This, when added to other treatments such as facials or skin needling, can enhance and accelerate the effect and give you a glow boost.

What is LED?

LED, or light-emitting diode is an electronic component that emits therapeutic light energy. LED Light Therapy is a skincare treatment that involves exposing your skin to various wavelengths of light, including red and blue, to address a wide range of concerns. The light reaches depths of up to 8 – 10 millimeters into the second layer of the skin which is the dermis, this is the layer where nerve endings, connective tissue, hair follicles, blood capillaries, and sweat glands can be found. The skin cells in the dermis convert the light energy into adenosine triphosphate or ATP a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells. ATP will give the skin the energy to rejuvenate and heal.

History of Led Light Therapy

Light therapy has been around long before LED was even developed. The ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Mayans worship sun deities to seek help in their ailments believing they have healing powers. Over 3500 years ago ancient Egyptians treated vitiligo with sunlight together with extracts from a weed that grew along the Nile river. In 1903 Niels Fisen received the Nobel Prize in Physiology for developing the first artificial light source to treat painful cutaneous tuberculosis skin lesions

In the 2000s Led light therapy was developed by NASA for muscle regeneration. Astronauts have been well documented to experience muscle and bone degeneration during their mission to space, studies showed that when cells are exposed to high and low gravity they stop multiplying and wounds do not heal until after landing to earth and getting that dose of sunlight. When NASA used Led Therapy it prevented muscle and bone degeneration and helped heal injuries even before landing. After such a great discovery, Led therapy was then used for cancer treatments to speed up the process of healing wounds and help in relieving pain and discomfort.

And then the beauty industry got hold of this technology, now Led Light is being used for treating skin conditions such as anti-aging, fine lines and wrinkles, correcting skin tone, improving elasticity, acne and rosacea among others.

Different Colors and Benefits

All about you skin clinic uses Bio-Synthesis™ a clinical version of LED. Bigger and better than the handheld devices marketed for home use. You can have it as an add on to other treatments as it works well in combination with facials, micro needling, dermaplaning, and others. It operates using 4 different types of coloured light therapy paired with revolutionary Suzuki Technology™ for better coverage. Each color has a different wavelength of light, and different wavelengths produce different chemical reactions within your skin cells. The longer the wavelength means that it will penetrate deeper into the skin but this doesn’t mean the deeper the penetration the better the benefits. You will be evaluated by our well-trained therapist to be able to determine the Led light color that best suits your skin concerns.

• RED LIGHT (620-700 nm) the most common light used in Led light therapy, it increases blood flow, helps in cell regeneration and is a medically-approved treatment for rosacea. Improves skin hydration, reduces redness and inflammation.
It stimulates collagen production which is a key factor in anti-aging. As you age, your body produces less and lower-quality collagen. One of the visible signs of this is in your skin becomes less firm and supple. Led light therapy with continued use helps in diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.

• BLUE LIGHT (450-495 nm) works to reduce acne by eliminating acne-causing bacteria, it also regulates oil production and reduces the size of pores. A decrease in bacteria and oil leads to a decrease or elimination of acne. Clinic grade Led light therapy is also used to treat sun damage and skin cancer growths to prevent skin cancer. It offers a UV-free alternative for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis.

• GREEN LIGHT (495-570 nm) works well to calm skin, it targets melanin-producing cells in the skin and prevents it from producing excess melanin. It aids in skin tone correction, reduces melasma, hyperpigmentation, dark circles under the eyes, redness, rosacea, vitiligo and other skin discoloration.

• YELLOW LIGHT (570-590 nm) soothes irritated skin, reduces inflammation and redness, stimulates collagen production, stimulates red blood cell production and minimizes UV sun damage. It is best used by those with sensitive skin and work great after laser procedures.

Is it safe?

Led light therapy itself does not contain ultraviolet rays, they’re safe for regular use and have no risk of tanning skin. It doesn’t cut, burn or break the skin and creates no heat, making it suitable for all skin types. The device used is also tested to an international standard demonstrating its safety. However, for those who have a certain condition or are under medication such as ( Isotretinoin for Acne) which makes you sensitive to light, Led light therapy is not recommended. But you don’t have to worry because there will be consultations done before any treatment or procedure to ensure your safety to all products that will be used on your skin

What do I expect after the treatment?

You may instantly see firmer, tighter skin and reduced pore size. Your skin will feel softer and smother giving you a vibrant and fresh glow after just one session. Since its non-invasive, no recovery time is needed. Results will be more dramatic and noticeable after a course of treatments and it’s recommended that you have maintenance sessions to make the effect last. Professional LED light therapy will get you the most dramatic results compared to home LED light devices because the light frequencies on home LED’s just aren’t effective.
